Volando Alto (Osprey Wings): A Collaborative OER Textbook for Beginning Spanish
26.11.2025, 12:00–12:45 o'clock (Europe/Berlin), Green Room

This presentation explores the development of Open Educational Resources (OER) in the classroom as a model to enhance learning outcomes and increase student agency while alleviating the financial burdens traditionally associated with textbook costs. It centers on an ongoing initiative to create an accelerated online Spanish textbook, OspreyWings / Volando alto, in which undergraduate students actively collaborate in the design and authorship of a multimedia OER.
The project integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), and other emerging digital tools to foster immersive, interactive experiences that extend beyond the limits of conventional language learning. Within the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, the textbook is designed to embrace student variability, ensuring multiple pathways for engagement, expression, and representation.
By merging co-creation with technology-enhanced pedagogy, OspreyWings / Volando alto not only expands access and affordability but also empowers students to become active producers of knowledge. The result is a scalable, inclusive model of language instruction that reimagines how OER and AI can intersect to democratize education and prepare learners for the demands of a global, digitally mediated world.
