Growing the Open HPE Movement: An Introduction and Invitation

The principles of openness—collaboration, access, and shared knowledge—are at the very heart of health and holistic medical practice. Shouldn't the education that powers it be the same? Health Professions Education often remains rooted in traditional, closed models, limiting innovation and accessibility. The Open HPE Collective is a global initiative working to change this by advocating for Open Pedagogy and Open Educational Resources (OER) in Health Professions Education. In this session, we will share our journey: the urgent need for a cultural shift towards openness in health education, our efforts to build a community of practice, and the unique challenges we face.
As we plan our next phase of growth, this session will focus on a key strategic question: how to best build a sustainable and impactful community. We will explore the dilemma of whether to create a dedicated, specialized hub for health educators, or to embed our movement within the broader network of existing open communities. We invite participants to a rich, collaborative discussion, sharing insights and successful strategies from their own fields to help us navigate this choice.
