25.11.2025, 21:00–21:45 o'clock (Europe/Berlin), Orange Room
Two open education librarian practitioners will engage in a structured conversation, drawing on both their shared and differing experiences working in public higher education institutions that support instructors in using and creating open educational resources (OER). The discussion will build on their prior work exploring the lived experiences of open education professionals navigating issues of professional stratification and subordination as they support and often lead open infrastructure projects. Key events related to open education in the United States, as well as the broader global movement, will be referenced to contextualize the evolution of “open” in higher education in the 21st century, particularly over the past 10–15 years.
They will also address the recurring contradictions encountered in their work under the conditions of capitalism and austerity policies affecting public and social services, including education. The speakers will interview one another and respond to a series of incisive, open-ended prompts designed to illuminate their evolving perspectives, informed by philosophy and contemporary scholarly critiques of the open education landscape.
