Open for Democracy! “Beyond Cost Savings: Open Education as Resistance” (Rebroadcast from OpenEd24)
26.11.2025, 02:00–02:45 o'clock (Europe/Berlin), Plenary Hour

Beyond Cost Savings: Open Education as Resistance” was the title of the keynote at 2024 Open Education Conference. On October 8, 2024 Joy Shoemate and James Glapa-Grossklag shared their insights and experiences.

At OERcamp.global, we will broadcast an abridged recording of their keynote speech. This is possible because the OpenEd24 videos have been published as open educational resources (OER). Joy and James will NOT be present. However, there will be time for a moderated discussion after the presentation.

Read the announcement from 2024:
“We will recall the early goal of Open Education to “have the freedom to use, customize, improve and redistribute educational resources without constraint.” (Cape Town Declaration, 2008) Today, in the face of platform capitalism and open-washing, this type of freedom can seem far away. By highlighting the Open for Antiracism Program and other community efforts to re-tool the master’s tools, we will show how practicing Open Education can be an act of resistance, driving social justice and crafting a community-informed vision of the future.

James Glapa-Grossklag is the Dean of Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning at College of the Canyons (California, USA). He supports the 115 California Community Colleges implementing the Zero Textbook Cost Degree Program. James is past Board President of Open Education Global; the Community College Consortium for OER; and Directors of Educational Technology in California Higher Education. He served as an OER trainer for the US State Department, was Innovation Scholar in Residence at RMIT University in Melbourne, and was a member of the ICDE OER Advocacy Committee. He earned tenure as a Professor of History.

Joy Shoemate is the Director of Online Education at College of the Canyons where she supports instructors’ successful integration of technology into teaching and learning to promote student success, persistence and completion in distance education courses. She also oversees the development and adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER).

In addition to her role at COC, Joy co-developed and co-facilitates the Open for Antiracism (OFAR) course, in which faculty participants throughout the CCC system leverage open education to make their courses culturally responsive and antiracist.
