Generative AI has introduced new possibilities—and new tensions—at the frontier of Open Education. GenOER.org is an experimental platform that explores what happens when AI becomes both a creator and a curator of Open Educational Resources (OER). Operating in what we call “autonomous mode,” GenOER continuously generates new OER artifacts—quizzes, summaries, and learning materials—based on existing open content, allowing educators to observe, review, and remix AI-produced outputs.
This session presents GenOER as a living laboratory for the future of open educational practice. Participants will see demonstrations of “synthetic OER” being generated in real time, learn about the underlying architecture (AI pipelines, review workflows, and metadata tagging), and discuss emerging frameworks for authorship, attribution, and validation when AI acts as a co-author.
Ultimately, the session invites a critical reflection on openness “at the edge”—where human educators, AI agents, and open data intersect—and asks: how can we design systems that preserve human judgment, transparency, and educational value in an era of machine co-creation?
