Advocacy Strategies for Combating Inclusive Access Programs
26.11.2025, 12:00–12:45 o'clock (Europe/Berlin), Orange Room

The course material market in higher education has evolved rapidly over the last decade, introducing significant changes into how textbooks are bought, sold, and distributed. For the U.S and Canadian open education movements, the growth of “Inclusive Access” programs represent existential threats to the progress made by open education advocates over the last decade. As more campuses move to these models, it removes incentives to adopt OER and potentially devalues or obscures the work that OER advocates have done.

This session will seek to help equip open education advocates with the necessary skills to confront decision-makers at their institutions who may be considering implementing an “Inclusive Access” program. This session will consist of two components: First, a brief 5-10 minute background of Inclusive Access as an issue of interest. Then, with the remaining time, participants will dive into learning practical advocacy techniques such as how to frame problems, set goals, develop strategies, and pitch solutions to decision-makers.
